#44. THE SPANDREL

#44. THE SPANDREL

Hark! I hear a spandrel in Washington Square. Well, I only imagine I hear it. But I definitely see it.

A spandrel is a bit of architectural sculpture. There are two spandrels curving languidly over the top of the Arch’s opening. They are allegorical female angels with wings and flowing gowns. The one on the left toots a long thin horn. I’m sure no one ever notices her. Maybe they would if they knew the history.

William Rhinelander Stewart, who gave a large donation to help build the arch, wanted the architect to make one spandrel’s face look like his wife's. He also suggested that the architect, Stanford White, make the other spandrel resemble his own wife.

Mr. Stewart did not get his wish. Neither did Mr. White.
